Professional Advisors Council Formed

The newly formed Professional Advisors Council will focus on making more philanthropic dollars available to the community.

Rick Akins of Akins, Nowlin & Prewitt LLP, a member of the Council, worked with the Greater Round Rock Foundation referring one of his clients and leading to a bequest worth more than five million dollars.

The Council, comprised of estate planning, financial and investment professionals, will assist the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation in increasing it’s focus on planned charitable giving, as well as providing leadership in promoting future charitable gifts to community needs. It is the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation’s belief that regular and consistent emphasis on planned charitable giving will result in significant future financial support for charitable causes in our communities.

Bruce Bessner serves as Chair of the Professional Advisors Council. "The Professional Advisors Council will help increase the awareness of the principles of stewardship in our community. This Council will create opportunities for education and guidance in legacy planning."

Membership is exclusive to professionals who have worked closely with the Community Foundation. Members of the Community Foundation’s Professional Advisors Council will share their expertise with fellow professional advisors on how to effectively integrate philanthropy into conversations with clients. The Council also advises the Community Foundation about the changing needs of professional advisors and helps broaden the circle of advisors who recommend the Foundation to their clients. As a result, they will help connect donor visions with community needs.

Through the Council, professional advisors attend education sessions, receive legislative updates and are featured in the Foundation’s publications and website. These are just some of the ways Professional Advisors Council members will assist the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation and local nonprofit causes in their role to build a stronger community.

Year End Tax Planning Tips

I want to share with you something of significant importance: Donations contributed this year could produce a much bigger tax-saving benefit than if you donate the same amount next year. It’s a win-win situation that many people do not know about, but I want to be sure you do.

For years, higher-income taxpayers have worried about their itemized deductions and personal exemption write-offs being phased out. Consequently, they haven’t received the full benefit of the most popular itemized deductions such as mortgage interest, state and local taxes, charitable contributions, and miscellaneous deductions. Thankfully, these “phase-out” rules have been getting phased out since 2006 as part of the “Bush tax cuts.”

The good news: For 2010, the phase-out rules are gone.

The bad news: It’s only a one-year reprieve. The rules are scheduled to reappear in 2011 as the Bush tax cuts expire.

This one year repeal could mean tax savings for you. For 2010, you may actually be able to write off all of your itemized deductions and personal exemptions.*

My wife and I set up the Nancy and Nyle Maxwell Family Fund at the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation and are very pleased with that decision. Through the Foundation, you can set up your own donor advised fund now, receive a charitable deduction now, and then work with the staff to choose what charitable causes to support on your own time.

I urge you to take advantage of this substantial opportunity and make your donations by midnight December 31^st, 2010.

Wells Fargo has committed $10,000 to sponsor Year 2 of the young grantmaker's council, the ChangeMakers! Wells Fargo served as sponsor for the ChangeMakers last year (the inaugural year) and donated $10,000 to the cause. They were so impressed with the accomplishments of the group that they have donated another $10,000 to ensure ChangeMakers continues!

ChangeMakers, the young grantmaker’s council of the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation, are winding up their year-and the results are in! The 50 members from Round Rock area high schools logged over 500 hours learning about needs in the community and determining how they would invest their charitable dollars. They also completed two community service projects, offering their time and energies to those in need.
“The kids are amazing-they fully embrace the responsibility they’ve been given and have become passionate, engaged philanthropists,” said Kami Barron, Executive Director of Greater Round Rock Community Foundation. For full story...
